    Prof. Romana Netea-Maier, Radboudumc

    Romana Netea-Maier is an endocrinologist and a professor in Endocrine Tumors at the Radboud UMCNijmegen. In 2002 she obtained her PhD degree at the Radboud UMC Nijmegen. In 2005 she undertook studies to identify biomarkers for thyroid cancer, as visiting scientist at the University of Colorado Health Science Centre Denver, USA. Since her return to the Netherlands, she has been leading the Radboudumc Center of Expertise for Thyroid Carcinomas. Her specific research interest includes the pathogenesis of endocrine tumors and their long-term consequences focusing on thyroid cancer. An important part of her work is dedicated to understanding the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer, and its interplay with autophagy for cell survival, proliferation and dedifferentiation. She is chair of the Dutch Thyroid Cancer guideline committee and leader of the European Thyroid Association Cancer Group. As a board member EORTC Thyroid Cancer Group, she actively promotes important research themes such as patient participation and empowerment in collaboration with patient organizations from the Netherlands, France and Germany.
