    Dr. Hoong-Wei Gan, GOSH, UK

Dr. Hoong-Wei Gan is a consultant paediatric endocrinologist who leads on the neuroendocrine effects of brain tumours service at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH), UK. He graduated from the University of Nottingham Medical School, and then trained in paediatrics and subsequently paediatric endocrinology in both London and Nottingham. He has a longstanding interest in the hormonal effects of brain tumours and their treatment, particularly on the hypothalamo-pituitary axis, having completed both his research degrees in the area at University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. His MSc in Advanced Paediatrics thesis examined the tumour- and treatment-related factors influencing long-term neuroendocrine outcomes in children with optic pathway gliomas followed up over 30 years at GOSH, the largest longitudinal study to date. Subsequently, his PhD research focussed on the quantification of appetite-regulating hormones in children with hypothalamic obesity, with funding support from the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research. As Deputy Chair of the UK Guideline Development Group, he was instrumental in developing the first national evidence- and consensus-based guideline for the management of paediatric craniopharyngioma. He currently co-chairs the BSPED Hypothalamo-Axis Tumour Special Interest Group and coordinates the UK National Hypothalamo-Pituitary Axis Tumour Advisory Group, which supports national and often international decision-making in the management of complex sellar and suprasellar tumours in children. He is member of several working groups within the Endo-ERN and SIOP Brain Tumour Group, and is involved in several ongoing research trials on hypothalamic obesity at GOSH. He has an additional interest in training future generations of paediatric endocrinologists, currently leading education and training within his department and as well as being Education Lead for Digital Learning at the GOSH Learning Academy.
